Making a homemade protective mask can be very helpful with COVID-19 in these times that we have had to live through.

Always remember that good hand washing can help us reduce COVID-19 infections.

Some experts do not recommend the use of this type of mask, but better than nothing. In addition, not everyone has access to an approved mask, in your country you may have supply problems or have limited mobility and cannot go out to buy one.

Before you start, you should read the World Health Organization recommendations regarding when and how to use protective masks. It is advisable to use a mask:

  • If you are in good health, you only need to wear a mask if you are caring for someone you suspect may be infected with 2019-nCoV.
  • Also wear a mask if you cough or sneeze.
  • Masks are only effective when combined with frequent hand washing with a hydroalcoholic solution or soap and water.
  • If you must wear a mask, learn how to use it and how to remove it correctly.

They also advise us on how to put on, use, remove and discard a mask:

  • Before putting on a mask, wash your hands with an alcohol-based hand sanitizer or soap and water.
  • Cover your mouth and nose with the mask and make sure there is no space between your face and the mask.
  • Avoid touching the mask when wearing it; if you do, wash your hands with an alcohol-based hand sanitizer or soap and water.
  • Change your mask as soon as it is wet and do not reuse single-use masks.
  • To remove the mask: remove it from the back (do not touch the front of the mask); discard immediately in a closed container; and wash your hands with an alcohol-based hand sanitizer or soap and water.
