Audi Hungary has just commissioned the largest solar roof in Europe. The photovoltaic solar roof is the size of 22.4 football fields, includes 36,400 solar panels and generates 12 megawatts (MW).

A symbol of our commitment to sustainable development. It should produce 9.5 GWh of electricity per year, which is enough energy for around 9,800 average households.

Alfons Dintner, CEO of Audi Hungary.

The plant has actually been quite sustainable for the past few years. In 2012, it started producing most of its heating from geothermal energy, the rest being covered with biogas certificates.

Since early 2020, it has been using 100% green energy. This Audi Hungary factory in Győr was the second of 5 Audi Hungary factories to be carbon neutral, behind the only Audi Brussels achievement in 2018.

Before commissioning the solar roof, Audi did what everyone should do before installing solar power: It committed to a deep energy efficiency modernization that allows the plant to save 18,000 megawatt hours of energy per year.

In addition to being the European leader today in terms of rooftop solar installations, Audi Hungary is also the largest consumer of industrial geothermal energy in Hungary.

Since 2017, Audi’s logistics rail transport with Deutsche Bahn has been largely carbon neutral. By switching to DB Cargo’s “DBeco plus” product, the company has saved more than 13,000 tonnes of CO2 per year.

By switching to DB Cargo’s “DBeco plus” product, the company has saved more than 13,000 tonnes of CO2 per year. Since 2010, the so-called “green train” has been running between Ingolstadt and the freight port of Emden in the North Sea. Since 2012, “green trains” have also been in operation on the route from the Audi plant from Neckarsulm to Emden. Since 2019, Audi has also compensated for journeys between the factories in Ingolstadt, Győr and Brussels, the production site of the Audi e-tron.

From now on, the plant no longer fails to modify its production and start manufacturing electric cars again.
