Two Brazilian mechanical engineers have created an autonomous micro-hydroelectric power station. Its main advantage is its ease of installation and use in homes.

Felipe Wotecoski and Juliano Rataiczyk are mechanical engineers residing in the city of Curitiba. They designed a prototype of autonomous micro hydroelectric power station It can produce enough electricity to power three to five homes simultaneously.

For its installation, the user must live nearby a source of water, be it a small river, a stream and even a landfill. The condition that the stream must have is a natural fall of 15 meters or more, because the current must be strong to drive the turbine of the plant.

How does this autonomous hydroelectric power station work?

The device is the size of a minibar and eliminates the need for water tanks. Catchment in rivers and streams can be done directly in the flow of water (without interfering with the natural bed and without the need for dams) or directly at the outlet points of pressurized water.

Each 1000 W unit is capable of producing up to 720 kWh per month (4 to 5 times the average Brazilian residential consumption).

It has a two-way clock that records the energy generated, as well as the entrances and exits of the property. This way, you can save up to $ 132 per month on your electric bill.

Brazil supports micro and mini power plants.

Although the prototype is still in the improvement phase, it has been approved by Copel (Companhia Paranaense de Energía) and is 100% compliant with Aneel (Agência Nacional de Energía Eléctrica) standards.

Aneel supports the micro and mini-generation of energy on Brazilian territory. By regulatory resolution, any excess energy with a power greater than 75 KW and less than or equal to 5 MW can be returned to the municipality’s distribution network, taking into account user credits.

Felipe and Juliano were the winners of a competition sponsored by the Brazilian Society for Innovation and Research (Finep). They received as a prize one million reais which were used to create the Metha boot. Thanks to him, they will distribute the material and set up the assembly line.
