How to make an ecological sump

  • Choose the location.

If you have a choice, be sure to build it in the place where it may be more exposed to the sun because evapotranspiration will depend largely on it. Also look for an area where ventilation is guaranteed and, very important, that is away from any water pipe.

  • Determine the size.

How many people live in the house? This will be the first step in determining the size. Calculate, on average, two meters wide and one meter deep per resident.

  • Construction of the basin.

After having decided the above and dug the space, the next step would be to choose the method of construction of the basin which, according to criteria of safety and durability, could be the ferrocement, which combines concrete with wire mesh. For walls, it is recommended to apply a mixture of two parts of sand to one of water; while the proportion of sand would be 3 to 1 in the case of the ground, on which a layer of concrete can also be laid if it is not very firm.

  • Anaerobic chamber.

Once the structure is fixed and waterproofed, three days will have to elapse before building the chamber for the anaerobic digestion, for which they will be necessary. used tires and construction debris. The first will be placed one after another, in a row, creating a channel, as seen in the picture; while rubble, mostly pieces of brick or tiles, will fill the rest of the space until it covers the wheels. Remember to connect the fermentation chamber (the tires) to the drain.

  • Install the conduits.

Then three conduits of about fifty millimeters in diameter will be fixed for the taking of water samples to be analyzed.

  • Layers of materials.

Having mounted the camera again there will be at least 45 centimeters to cover below ground level. The first layer on the bricks and tires will be stone, on which an impermeable material should be laid that covers absolutely all the space to, just above, place the sand and soil, the first about ten centimeters and about 25 the second.

  • Protection.

Before you finish, you’ll need one last step to make sure the well is not affected by rain. For that, cover it with abundant foliage so that it is even above the rest of the field.
