Canada has just assembled the continent’s first large turbine capable of producing renewable energy from the tides.

The first large prototype was installed in the Bay of Fundy, off Nova Scotia. A technology still in development, but with high hopes for the future.

This technology is arousing the interest of certain projects around the world, but not yet commercially.

The companies in charge of the project are OpenHydro and Emera. The first turbine was installed and this week was connected to the local network.

This is the second prototype installed in the region. The first attempt was made in 2009, but the turbine was destroyed by the force of the sea in the region.

The Bay of Fundy has one of the highest tides in the world, 17 meters. A water flow of 115 billion tons is estimated during the tide.

The turbine measures 15 meters and weighs 1,000 tonnes. The installed capacity is 2 MW. The cost per MWh is $ 530, $ 0.53 per kWh. It is able to supply 500 houses.

They want to complete the project in 2017 until they reach 16 MW installed.

The ultimate goal, if all goes as desired, is to have 300 MW installed by 2020, to provide clean energy to 75,000 customers.
