Currently the cup hinge is one of the most used in DIY and furniture manufacturing. We can find them mainly in kitchen and bathroom furniture, although today their use has become widespread in almost any type of furniture.
Types of cup hinges
There are basically three types of hinges, depending on their use:
The straight hinge: It is one of the most used, as it covers the edge of the furniture. It is mainly used in kitchen and bathroom furniture.
The angled hinge: It is used mainly when we have only one side, and we need to put two doors on it.
The Super Angled Hinge: Used for the door to be folded laterally.
Likewise, we can find them in different cup diameters, such as 26 mm, 30 mm, 35 mm, 40 mm. The most used are 26 mm in diameter, for small and light weight doors, such as kitchen or bathroom furniture. The 35 mm in diameter, for larger and heavier doors, such as cabinet doors.
Cup hinge regulation
The hinges are pre-adjusted at the factory and the appropriate corrections can be made using the corresponding adjustment screws. This allows for small changes in the position of the door:
- Frontal or external movement.
- Vertical adjustment.
- Side adjustment.
There is another type of regulation, which not all hinges have, which is the pressure exerted by the door when it is closed. Using the screw, we can adjust whether the door closes abruptly or smoothly.
How many hinges are needed for a door?
To determine the number of hinges per door, we must keep in mind the weight, width and height. If we start with a maximum width of 60 cm. we have that the number of hinges to place are as follows:
- Up to 90 cm. 2 hinges.
- Up to 160 cm. 3 hinges.
- Up to 200 cm. 4 hinges.
- Up to 240 cm. 5 hinges.
We are taking on a chipboard, DM or light wood, like pine. If we go to heavier materials, we may need to increase the number of hinges for each measurement.
Drilling and positioning of cup hinges
Measurements: where do we drill?
Using a drill we can make the cup on the doors, for which we will take into account the following measures, “B”. The distance to the top edge, for both the top hinge and the bottom hinge, will be between 8 and 10 cm.
The remaining hinges, if any, are centered in relation to the upper and lower hinges. The distance from the edge to the center of the hinge diameter “A” is the most important measure.
For 26 mm hinges. in diameter, the measurement will be 17 mm (center of diameter), for 35 mm hinges. in diameter, the measurement will be 22 mm., (center of diameter).
Today it is easy to find models that not only simplify measurements, but drastically reduce the possibility of errors.
Cup Hinge housing
To make the hinge housing or hole, we will use a Strawberry Special. As with any type of tool, we can find them of better or worse quality. The advantage of a professional drill is that we can bring it for sharpening, it should also be noted that the drills are made without tears and with precision.
For the realization of the vat, we can use two systems, one, which would be with the drill and freehand, or placing the drill in a vertical support. It goes without saying that in any case we must respect the measures I indicate above. Obviously, using a support guarantees a better result.
It is advisable, not to mention extremely important, that before entering this task and damaging the door, we do the necessary tests, on a separate piece of wood, and of course it has the same thickness as the door. It is in this test that we will check if the hinge fits perfectly.
