Both Dekton and Silestone are two brands of compact solid surfaces widely used mainly to manufacture kitchen and bathroom countertops, but also coatings, floors, etc.

Both brands are owned by the Spanish company Cosentino. They are known and distributed worldwide. They are products of excellent performance, although they are by no means the only brands that market this type of product.

What is Silestone?

Silestone is a surface composed mainly of compact quartz, above 90%, and resins. It is a very versatile material that has revolutionized the market since its inception, even giving its name to this type of surface.

What is Dekton?

It is an ultra-compact surface made entirely of minerals. Due to its characteristics, it is ideal for the most demanding uses, including outdoors. These types of surfaces are also known as porcelain countertops.

Silestone VS Dekton

Variety of designs and textures. Currently it can be said that there is no color. Dekton is a relatively new material and the design catalog available is very limited when compared to Silestone. On the other hand, it must be said that the drawings we found, although in smaller numbers, are very current drawings. While under the Silestone brand, some of the designs that have seen the light over the past decade have already been discontinued.

Heat resistance. From a day-to-day perspective, this is the most significant difference between Dekton and Silestone. The latter has a limited resistance to heat, in fact, it is advisable not to place pots or pans that are still hot on their surface, as they may damage it. The same is not true for Dekton, which is not affected by high temperatures.

Scratch resistance. Both materials have excellent scratch resistance. The differences that exist should not be decisive when deciding between one and the other. Although if we had to name the winner, it would be Dekton.

Discoloration. This is another of the disadvantages of compact quartz or Silestone countertops. They discolor over time in direct sunlight.

Bumps and breaks. Both materials are very hard and, theoretically, have great resistance to shocks and breakage. The most common is that they are compared in this sense with granite. Getting better results in the Dekton laboratory test.

So far, the theory. What you’re seeing is that Dekton doesn’t look as strong as promised, cases of broken and chipped corners are frequent. Just do a search on the internet to find dissatisfied customers for these reasons. In defense of this type of material, it must be said that the installation should not be done by amateurs, but by trained professionals. Dekton countertops are a delicate material, similar to glass, until they are installed perfectly.

Price. Although there are important price differences within Dekton or Silestone due to the design, in general terms we can say that Silestone is cheaper than Dekton. Although neither is precisely an inexpensive material.
