Spain will host the first public lighting system powered exclusively by solar and wind energy. The only one in the world to produce electricity from 1.7 m / s. Researcher Ramón Bargalló is the man behind this development. He worked with the Eolgreen company to design their autonomous street lighting system. It is unique in the world and reduces costs by 20% compared to conventional street lighting systems.

Ramon Bargalló is a researcher belonging to the electrical engineering department of the Barcelona School of Industrial Engineering (EUETIB), at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC). In collaboration with the company Eolgreen, it developed the first autonomous public lighting system running on solar and wind energy.
This system, developed after four years of research, was designed for interurban roads, highways, city parks and other public spaces. It is unique in the world and reduces the cost by 20% compared to conventional street lighting systems.
The prototype is 10 meters high and is equipped with a solar panel, a wind turbine and a battery. The turbine operates at a speed of 10 to 200 revolutions per minute (rpm) and has a maximum power of 400 watts (W).
The goal of the developers is to make the lighting system more efficient, so they are working on a second generator that runs at a lower speed (10-60 rpm) and has a lower power (100 W). An electronic control system manages the energy flow between the solar panel, wind turbine, battery and light.
“It takes very little wind to generate energy. The generator which was developed can start at a wind speed of only 1.7 meters per second (m / s), whereas current wind turbines require more than 2.5 m / s. This low intensity can provide six nights of electricity without wind or sun “
To date, Eolgreen has signed agreements with the port of Huelva and the municipalities of Sant Boi de Llobregat, Girona and several towns in Andalusia. In 2015, the company plans to produce 700 of these new streetlights.
