When we make reforms and decorate our home, the the choices we make are very important. Not only because they are expensive and directly affect our pocket, but also because, if we change our mind, sometimes it is very expensive to undo what we have already fixed.
When we talk about rwarm flooring, we can refer to the two shades, which will be brown or orange and are ideal for living room or bedrooms, or thermal sensation, as some, like wood or rugs, are warmer than other floors like ceramic or stone.
One of the decisions that we must consult carefully pillow when we make reforms at home are the flooring, because it is a task with a certain complexity. In addition, tiles and wall coverings determine the style of the house.
When choosing the type of coating for our house, we must take into account several aspects, how are:
- Type of stay or use: a floor for the exterior is not the same as for the interior. The former are more exposed to wear. Also, if we want to create different environments, we will not use the same floor for a bathroom as for our bedroom, for example.
- Hardness and wear: depending on whether we have children or animals, or the number of people living in the house, we will have to choose floors with more or less resistance to wear. If we choose a weak soil, probably after a few years, we will have to make a new expense to renew it.
- Glide: if we are looking for a floor for the terrace or for the shower area and around a swimming pool, we will have to look for non-slip floors. There is a risk that, if they get wet with a certain frequency, we will suffer falls.
Floor coverings – Materials and types
Floor coverings are classified into different types depending on the material they are made of. As we saw in the previous section, there are floors that are more wear-resistant, others that are warmer … Therefore, depending on the aesthetic and what is best suited for what we are looking for, we will make our choice.
Ceramic floors consist of parts made with a mixture of clay and water. Some have an enamel coating and others are matte. The installation of this type of flooring presents a certain complexity. They are very resistant to wear with continuous use and hold up well to moisture and dirt.
These types of floors are cold, so they are ideal for warm environments. They are most common in the interior because there is a wide variety of patterns and textures.
The wood floors give a great warmth to the environment and they are very resistant; they can last for years in perfect condition. However, they require a series of care to keep it in good condition, using wax-based cleaning products and renewing the layer of varnish from time to time. Its conservation also depends on temperature and humidity.
If we use wood, it is practical to invest in quality wood, because the time it will last will not compensate us for the cost of its installation. This is usually quite difficult unless it is a floating platform i.e. adjustable slats.
The basic types of the laying of wood are the parquet, which are small and short boards; the planks, long and parallel, and the planks, which resemble the previous ones, but nailed to the ground with screws.
Being delicate, avoid contact with water or light.
Stone floors are the most durable and resistant wear due to continued use, dents or scratches. These advantages have some drawbacks to be taken into account: the price is high and, in addition, they are difficult to install. The most commonly used types are marble, granite, sandstone, slate, and cobblestone, which is the strongest of all and, therefore, is the one used on the streets.
Smoothed cement and printed concrete have gained in importance in recent years, presenting itself as an alternative floor to the classics that we usually use. They are very resistant and easy to maintain. Like stone floors, they are cold and their installation is quite complex, although the price is lower than them.
- Vinyl and synthetic coating:
The Vinyl and laminate floors are the easiest to install and clean. In addition, they have great water resistance and are adaptable to any surface. They are insulating against cold and heat and are available in a wide variety of designs. The best part of all is their price because they are cheap. The disadvantage of this type of flooring is that it is poorly resistant to wear and continuous use.
This type of flooring is used in colder countries, such as the UK, because they are hot and insulate against low temperatures. They are easy to install and provide comfort. They are resistant to time but require continuous cleaning, as they easily accumulate dust and dirt.
Flooring – Systems
Floor coverings are laid using different systems, depending on the material we have chosen.
Adhesives are generally used for fix the tiles to the floor below. There are different types of joints, as well as self-leveling. However, this part is usually taken care of by the expert who will install the floor. The joints, which are the lines that separate some tiles from others, are in charge of our choice, both color and distance. It is always advisable to leave a little separation as the soil can swell.
