Photovoltaics and aesthetics must not be in contradiction. With this principle as its key, the Swiss Center for Electronics and Microtechnology (CSEM) has just launched its latest innovation: the integration of high-definition photographs into solar panels. Is An idea with a strong artistic component was called Kaleo-Solar and it is suitable for urban use, for example as an advertising medium, or for installation on the facades of houses and commercial premises.

Images that capture a dreamy gaze, a mischievous gesture or a radiant smile, that’s all we see (which is not a little) of that new solar technology based on illustrated panels. Así, esta innovación no solo da un paso más en la exploración de sistemas de energía solar más estéticos, sino que se sumerge de lleno en el mundo del arte that, in este caso, captured the atención de los viandantes al tiempo que capta energía procedente from the sun.

These panels were seen for the first time in an exhibition organized in the central offices of Banque Cantonale Neuchâteloise in the city of Neuchâtel. Up to six high-definition “photovoltaic” photographs taken by photographer Guillaume Perret, which, with three panels, completed an installation producing energy throughout the duration of the exhibition, were exhibited there.

Although this artistic demonstration was chosen for its debut, the panels created by the CSEM can display the considered image, only on the condition that it lets in enough light for the panel to produce energy. The promoters ensure that a Kaleo-Solar installation of 30 to 40 square meters would be enough to supply a house in which four people reside.

The Swiss Center for Electronics and Microtechnology sees in this technology that makes solar panels invisible a promising alternative for the field of architecture, in which the integration of photovoltaic solar systems is increasingly sought after. In addition to their potential uses for this land, these panels hidden behind photographs could replace traditional billboards which fill the streets of large cities, fulfilling the same function but, at the same time, producing absolutely clean energy.
