The floating floors It has become one of the favorite options for decorating all kinds of rooms. Sleek, inexpensive, and easy to install, laminate flooring gives you a plethora of options when decorating your home and can make a room bigger, brighter, and much more attractive without much effort. Then in DIY 10 we teach you how to place a laminate floor, parquet or laminate floor.
What is a floating floor?
First of all, many people wonder exactly what is a floating platform. Laminate flooring is a floor made up of different types of wood panels. The main difference that these floors have with others that are also made of wood panels is that these boards are not nailed or glued to the floor, but rather interlock to create a uniform whole.
The wood that generally forms these floors is cheaper, but also more resistant to damage and its installation system allows those who choose this route to save a lot of money during installation. In addition, since the panels are neither glued nor nailed to the floor, these slats can be quickly replaced by others without any problem and if at any time you want to change the type of flooring, the flooring will not have suffered no damage and you can put whatever you want. without any inconvenience.
When you go to choose your laminate floorYou have to keep in mind that there are many types of wood that you can choose from. But you should also take into consideration the different types of laminate flooring available to you. There are mainly three:
Types of laminate flooring
-Synthetic or laminate flooring: This type of laminate flooring is made up of different layers of wood-based products. The difference from other types is the last layer, which is made of a synthetic compound that usually mimics the pattern of real wood. The fact that you can print designs of different types of materials (like stone or ceramic) or wood makes this the most popular option, as you can choose the look of your floor without any problems. This type of platform is generally very resistant and is particularly recommended for rooms of the house where there is a lot of traffic or which are very punished (such as hallways or children’s rooms) or for houses where there are pets or very young children.
-Multi-layer wood floor. This type of driftwood is made, as the name suggests, of several layers of different types of wood. In this way, the lower deck of the deck is usually made of a cheaper stabilizing material, while the middle layers are made of cheap wood and the top layer usually includes a noble wood which gives a richer look to the final finish. . The final coat is usually varnished and is considered a great option for those who want a parquet-like floor but are looking for a cheaper option.
-Solid floor. This type of flooring is made, for the most part, of two or three thick layers of the same wood, forming a solid and very functional whole. They usually have different types of anchors to hold the different parts of the flooring, but the process of laying this type of laminate flooring is the same. It’s generally ideal for areas with lots of light and even outdoors, as it doesn’t have the design or finish that the other two options feature.
Examples of floating floors:
Although we have already seen some types of floating floors depending on the material they are made from, some of them are more suitable for the type of floor and the type of floating floor carpentry that we are going to place.
Here are different examples of laminate flooring that we can install:
- Laminate flooring : The first example of laminate flooring is laminate flooring, which is the most popular and well-known. While laminate flooring can be glued to the substrate, most if not all of the models we find usually come with laminates that are simply installed on a “floating” basis.
- Designer vinyl flooring: Vinyl floors are generally recessed sheet by sheet, but can also be glued to the sub-floor thanks to the variable rate system.
- Engineered flooring: Most engineered flooring is installed using nails or parquet staples attached to a plywood substrate. However, some brands can be installed on a floating base.
- Ceramic floors: Almost all tiles are laid on a substrate. However, some companies bet on ceramic tiles on laminate floors. Instead of being glued together with mortar, the tiles are assembled via nested plastic trays. This is a fairly expensive type of laminate flooring, which has made it a barrier to its failure in the market.
Now let’s see how you can place a floating platform. We will explain it to you from the laminate floors we have already mentioned. If you follow all the steps, they will surely look good on you and you can also do the same for laminate or parquet.
How to install laminate, laminate or parquet
One of the reasons that laminate flooring has become so fashionable is that it can be installed very easily, which saves a lot of money on costs. Next, we’ll show you how to lay your new laminate flooring yourself. With these steps you can also lay laminate floors and parquet.
Materials you will need:
- A squad
- A hand saw
- 1 hammer
- 1 meter
- PVA glue other than water
- A mounting kit consisting of wooden blocks, tongue and groove block and pulling device.
Prepare the platform or floor or parquet where you are going to place it
Before you start laying the laminate flooring, you must allow it to condition. You must place the laminate flooring for at least 48 hours, in the room in which it will be placed. You do not need to open the packaging, as this is only for the material to get used to the environmental conditions of the room or the room for which it is intended. This way, if it is a very hot room and the wood expands a bit as a result, you will know it in advance and it will not damage an already laid floor.
Prepare the ground
In the first place, properly prepare the floor or pavement on which you are going to lay your laminate floor. Make sure there are no slopes, and if you notice any, correct it first. You should also make sure that it is clean, so that there is no type of dirt that interferes with its subsequent placement. Then, once you have done all of the above, lay on an insulating floor covering, usually in the form of polyethylene foam. This insulation will help your home retain heat and will also act as a protective barrier between your patio and the floor. That way, if a problem arises, like a water leak, there will be a protective barrier that protects your patio. You can easily secure it to the sidewalk with specialized tape and it is recommended to place it perpendicular to the boards, so that the whole thing is tighter.
Laying laminate flooring
Then you can start laying your new laminate flooring. We recommend that you start at one end of the room, making sure the part next to the door is the last one covered. Many recommend placing them perpendicular to the light source, so that it can highlight its strengths and hide its flaws, but it will depend on the type of room we are talking about. Taking this into account, start laying the planks leaving about 15mm clearance from the wall. To maintain this space, we recommend using wedges or staples, as they will prevent the gap from shifting or changing as you lay the boards.
Taking this into account, start assembling the different parts. These will fit easily thanks to the “click” type system that most parts of this type have. However, keep in mind that sometimes you will need to cut parts of the boards to fit the shape of the room and the more difficult corners of it, such as the corners or the door space.
When you’re done with one line, start with the next one, join the boards by the conduit of males and females. It will not be difficult to achieve this and continue this procedure until the entire surface of the room is covered.
Once you are done remove any shims or staples you placed at the start to separate the deck from the wall. Here you will put some plinths also made with planks from your laminate flooring, which you can attach to the wall with specialized glue. We do not recommend using nails because, if you do, there will be very unsightly holes and their heads will be very noticeable, breaking the uniformity that the wood of the terrace presents. Glue is a much better option for this case.
To give a final touch, you can cover the floor with a product specially designed to preserve wood. In the case of multilayer laminate floors, it is convenient to varnish the last floor.
How to clean a laminate floor, a laminate floor or a parquet?
Finally, and before leaving you with a video in which you will see how you can place the laminate flooring, as we have explained to you, it is also important that once placed, your laminate flooring is always clean.
Like the laminate floors, or parquet, laminate floors require certain care, Although it is a type of floor that can be swept, scrubbed or cleaned without too many problems or without as many problems as those which usually have, for example, parquet, which is generally more delicate.
Of course, unlike parquet specifically, it is not good for you to wet the laminate floor a lot, so you won’t need a lot of water when you scrub it.
First departures sweep, then you pass a brush, followed by the vacuum cleaner and finally we scrub. You don’t have to do this daily, you can sweep every day to remove dust and surface dirt and deep clean with everything we said, once a week.
