Macrame is a handcrafted fabric made from threads or braided or knotted ropes. Precisely, the the meaning of macrame is the knot, it is a word of French origin. Today, it is widely used to manufacture bracelets and necklaces, so if you are planning to learn some craft, here we explain how learn to weave macrame.

How to learn to weave macrame step by step

To learn how to make macrame, what it takes to learn is to tie knots. It is an art of the highest antiquity, which is why it is done only with the help of the hands. Examples of peoples who used it are the Persians or the Assyrians. The Arabs also adopted it and exported to EuropeFrom there it came to America in the hands of Europeans and there the Caribbean culture used it to weave their hammocks.

The materials we will need to learn macrame weaving are the own weaving yarn, which can be cotton, silk, linen, jute or any other natural fiber, and a type of surface on which we can hold the fabric we are braiding.

If we have another type of yarn with a strong consistency, it can also be used to create macrame. However, depending on what you want to make, you have to choose one type of wire or another. Most frequently used are the cotton or silk.

The type of material used to hold the wires will also depend on the type of crafts we will make. Once we have the materials, we can start tying the knots. In the next section, we will explain the types of simpler knots what is and how to do it.

The knots for weaving macrame

Macrame can be made using a large variety of knots (more than 50); the best known and most used are the flat knot and the rib knot. With these knots, borders are created, which are woven or layered lists, as well as braids, which are used to decorate fabrics, curtains, tapestries, bags, lamps, etc.

When we start to make macrame, it is convenient to first learn the different types of knots that are separately before we start to combine them in your designs. In general, macrame is quite simple, but it is important to be patient because like everything else, we will improve our technique with continued practice.

Some of the most used nodes are:

Lark knot

This node is used for thread the threads we use. It is the easiest to do. The first thing we need to do is pass the thread that weaves under the other thread we have, which is called a guide. This step is of vital importance.

Then we move on the two ends of the thread inside the buttonhole that we have trained with it. Next we will stretch the fabric, placing it facing us, making sure that both ends are the same length. The end point should be tight and attached to the guide wire.

Double lark knot

This type of knot serves us to complete the previous one. To do this we have to start with the simple lark knot, once done we will work with the two threads we have, starting with one and continuing with the other.

We place one of the two threads on the guide, then we will pass the end of the thread through the eyelet that we have formed, always below the guide, and we will pull down so that it is well adjusted. Finally, we will repeat the same step with the other thread.

is the point type already has greater complexity, but by learning something we can do it without problem.

The twisted knot is made of two threads; we have to place the two between thumb and index finger, remaining at the same height as the last articulation of the fingers, that is to say the distal one. Then we will move the thumbs and threads to the tips of our fingers. Now is the time to exchange the threads of the site.

In case we haven’t followed the previous step, when let’s finish laying the wires, we will see that the knot is undone. For this reason, it is convenient to practice a lot until we understand it well and are right.

Three strand braid

This type of knot is the one that is very frequently used to make the braids in hair. The instructions for making this type of knot are very simple. First we will pass the left thread over the central thread and adjust them. Next, we are going to go through the thread that is in the center the one on the right side, and so we will repeat until we run out of thread.

When we have controlled these points, we can start to create simple bracelets.

Basics of macrame

When we learn to weave macrame we have to keep in mind that every knot we make has a right and a reverse, as happens with the clothes we sew. If, while we are weaving, we find that a stitch does not match the same stitch, the best we can do is take it apart and redo it until it looks good.

Don’t get frustrated if you initially struggle to perform simpler knots like the ones we have proposed to you. It’s normal! You must remember when you learned to write the alphabet in school; how difficult it was to hold the pencil and mark the letters following the dots.

It’s the same! Even if you follow the instructions that we give you, it is normal to go slowly and some knots do not turn well. Take a deep breath. It is only with practice and patience that you will be able to make creations. Think how original you will be when you manage to create unique macrame bracelets.
