If you are planning to build your own solar home system offline, one option you can explore to improve its performance is to make it mobile. To do this, we show you how to create it, in this case using parts of a bike trailer although, once you get the idea, you can adapt it to your needs.

  • Trailer: Although you can choose the one that suits you the best, for example if you have the option of reusing something you have at home, in this project a bicycle trailer was used. To adapt it to its new function, it must be freed from the plastic body, in addition to being cut in half. Later, it is fixed to a frame with screws to have a solid support.
  • Solar module: A 17 volt 80 watt was used for this project.
  • Investor: In this example, we used a vehicle inverter that transforms 12 volts DC into 120 AC.
  • Charge controller: Almost any 12 volt charge controller will help you to provide battery protection while charging.
  • Drums: To fit the rest of the system, you will need a 12 volt battery. If you prefer it to be 24, no problem, however you will need to make sure that your module and inverter are consistent.
  • Mounting material (steel spacers, brackets, nuts, screws, washers, cables …).

Step 1: Create the trailer.

Although in this case a children’s bicycle trailer was used as the base, you can use whatever you have or want. What will be important is secure it well so that it is secure and you don’t end up with your panel on the floor. To do this, fix the timber by screwing it to the steel frame. Then use shelf supports or the like to keep the wood upright. It is important that the position is firm since the whole electrical installation will go on this board, as shown in the picture.

To repair the solar panel, you can use the parts usually used for this purpose, which you can buy from any specialist supplier. It is also possible to opt for conventional materials that you have at home or that you can buy at home improvement stores.

Finally, to hold the battery, you will need a nylon strap loop or rope or twine.

Step 3: System ready to use.

With that, everything would be ready and, if the project went well, you could start using your towable solar system to take advantage of the sun’s energy at home or in any outdoor activity, for example when you go camping or at the beach where, like that, you will not have to give up recharging your mobile or your laptop.
