Hydrelio is a system to be developed floating photovoltaic solar farms in a simple, affordable, easily scalable and sustainable wayAccording to its developers, the French company Ciel & Terre.
The innovative floating solar platform Hydrelio allows the installation of standard photovoltaic solar panels in large aquatic spaces, such as reservoirs, lakes, irrigation canals, ponds, among others. It’s an easy to install and cost effective alternative to above ground solar farms, in areas where you don’t want to waste it. Aquaculture farms, wastewater treatment plants, cooperative irrigation tanks, among others, are companies and organizations that can benefit from this technology, taking advantage of the synergy created between the solar installation and the dam water.
In addition to saving on the field, there are other advantages:
- Thanks to the cooling effect of the water in the solar panels, these systems produce more energy than those installed on land of similar size.
- By protecting the water from the heat of the sun, these platforms prevent evaporation, increasing the return on investment.
- They improve water quality and reduce maintenance costs by reducing algae growth.
- The system can incorporate aerators and devices for circulating water, powered by solar energy, which oxygenate it and keep it in good condition, saving on chemicals and maintenance. They call this technology Aquago, and it was developed by a subsidiary of the company.
This system obviously does not require excavation work or the use of concrete. The floats are made of HDPE plastic, they are 100% recyclable and easy to remove. They can be used without health problems, even in tanks that contain water that is going to be used for drinking.
Hydrelio’s innovative floating solar technology has already been put to the test, and has an estimated useful life of approximately 30 years. Since 2011, the system has been tested in a pilot project in France, where it has proven its effectiveness and proper functioning.
They are currently developing several projects, one of 12 MW and the other of 4 (in the south of France), which will provide clean electricity to thousands of homes without wasting precious farmland.
