These low cost solar powered shelters, have already been used in Ethiopia and Iraq, just received an honorary award at the Swedish Design Awards. They are the result of a collaborative effort between the IKEA Foundation and the Refugee Housing Unit (RHU), and were designed to provide a durable, comfortable and energy-intensive alternative to the traditional canvas tents that typically house refugees in times of crisis.

In 2013, a formidable team set out to design easily deployable shelters that would not only provide the basic necessities of people required in emergency housing, but could also provide a little privacy, comfort and dignity. These shelters are made of laminated polymer panels with thermal insulation. Thanks to its simple design, assembly takes less than 4 hours.

The shelters have an area of ​​188 m2, can accommodate up to 5 people, which is double the amount usually allocated for typical refugee tents in extreme situations.

The roof of the shelters IKEA Foundation It has solar panels, which makes it possible to produce electricity for basic needs, as well as for communication. The roof is also designed to cool the shelters during the day and heat them at night.
