Lined solid wood boards are formed by the union of several wooden slats, so they are also called slat slabs. This achieves:
- Greater stability.
- Larger dimensions.
- Greater use of the tree.
Strictly, the only requirement is that each of the plates or strips that make up the plate must have the same thickness.
In most cases, they are also the same width and different lengths. In these cases, once a large piece is finished, it is cut and square to the dimensions in which it was sold.
You can also find boards where boards of different widths and lengths are used. They offer an asymmetrical appearance.
It is possible, although very rare, to find boards made of a single piecebasically a wide plate. There are several disadvantages in this case: there is a high risk of bending and the availability of sizes is very limited.
In many ways, it is difficult to assess or classify the characteristics of this type of board as determined by the wood used. Therefore, it would be necessary to resort to the wood charter in particular. Some of these properties would be: density, resistance to humidity, stability, thermal conductivity, acoustic and thermal insulation, durability, etc.
Most Used Woods
Hundreds of different woods can be used to make slats from solid wood. The choice has important consequences in almost every way: appearance, density, durability, price …
The most used woods are:
Adhesives play an important role in the quality and types of use to which a solid card can be subjected. Today, two types are used mainly:
- Urea Formol. For indoor use.
- Formaldehyde Phenol. For external use.
Types of joins between tables
Glues and one of the following two techniques are used to join the different boards that make up the slat board:
- Butt. The parts are simply joined without any machining.
- Toothed joint or finger joint. Milling is done on the side of the plate which allows some to fit together. This technique offers a better bond.
When we talk about quality in this field, we refer to the number of defects and / or knots in the wood. Solid wood boards can be purchased in different qualities. The most common:
- No defects on both sides.
- A face with defects and others without them.
- With defects on both sides (within limits).
The more logical the price of the solid board, the higher the fewer defects.
Finishes and Treatments
Solid wood boards can be purchased in a raw state, that is, simply sanded and without any finishing or treatment applied to them. In the latter case, the possibilities are enormous and depend on the supply of the manufacturer or distributor, or on the demand of the customer.
Varnished slatted boards are the most common, although they can be found oiled, stained or even with water repellent treatments, fire retardants or against insects or fungi.
Uses of strip plates
This type of board is mainly used for the manufacture of furniture, DIY and carpentry in general (steps, benches, tables, doors …).
Classification according to the degree of exposure
Depending on the wood and the adhesive used, the board can be classified for use in certain environments:
- SWP 1. Dry environment.
- SWP 2. Humid environment.
- SWP 3. External environment.
Degree of humidity
The moisture content of wood is an extremely important variable that often goes unnoticed by non-professionals. If the humidity is high, the risk of deformation of the wood is high. The values that the wood must offer at the time of supply must be:
- 8 ± 2% for dry environment.
- 10 ± 3% for humid environment.
- 12 ± 3% for outdoors.
Solid plate prices and measurements
The price of solid or slatted wood boards varies widely. It mainly depends on the wood used, but also on the adhesives or finishes applied, if any.
The most common measures for slat boards are: 244 × 122, 330 × 120, 200 × 50 centimeters.
Regarding thickness: 18, 22, 30 or 42 millimeters.
