The Laminate floors are, with proper care and maintenance, a strong and durable option. This is not to say that they cannot be scratched, damaged or damaged.

If this happens, there are different ways to repair a laminate or laminate floor. Everything will depend on the type of problem and severity. Repair a scratch, join pieces that have separated, stubborn stains or even the raised deck has a solution.

Repair scratches and small marks

To fix a scratch on a laminate floor, you can’t do what you would do with natural wood floors, ie sand and re-varnish.

What we are going to try to do is fill in and hide risks caused, for example, by dragging furniture or small bumps.

There are several options, on the internet you will find dozens of them. We are left with two, which we believe offer a better result:

Highlighter. More than one will say, this is no solution for anything, you are just painting the damage. Yes it is so. In addition, after rubbing a little, the marker may need to be run again.

But on the other hand, there’s nothing faster and easier to apply. It takes a few seconds, and if we find the right color, the result is very good, you would have to get close enough to see the risk.

Obviously, the marker would be just a solution for removing small scratches on a laminate floor. If the problem is greater, that is, relatively deep scratches, cracks or protrusions that have raised small parts of the top layer of the laminate, we must resort to the use of specific masses.

Mass or waxes. There are several laminate floor repair kits on the market. Perhaps the most popular are those offered by the well-known brands Quick-Step and Pergo.

These types of kits generally include waxes of various colors, some also pigments, ready to mix or match, and achieve a wide variety of colors. Usually, they also include spatulas and / or brushes to facilitate application. Here is a video explaining one of the options:

Clean stains on laminate floors

The ease of cleaning laminate floors is one of its great advantages, we just have to be careful not to clean with excess water (use the mop or mop very well twisted) and prevent water from accumulating or entering the joints.

This ease of cleaning is due to the fact that the surface layer of a laminate is a resistant and non-porous (impermeable) surface. If we use a suitable cleaner, we will usually have a shiny laminate floor in perfect condition with very little effort.

That said, stains associated with products like paints or inks are a problem, as they can be relatively persistent or difficult to remove.

In these cases we can use a cloth soaked in acetone and rub carefully so that the liquid does not penetrate the joints. With that we must solve the problem.

Open meetings

Although it is not common, at least it should not be, if everything is done correctly, the joints of a laminate floor can open.

This problem, in the vast majority of cases, is associated with a bad installation, during which they were not well sealed, with a bad product (poor machining, bad click system, defective fiber board …) or variations in humidity levels out of common.

Repairing a laminate floor that has open joints can be very simple if the problem affects one or a few joints and is due to an installation defect. Or complex, if the problem is widespread.

Some open meetings

Some time ago we published an article where we explain how to join the slats whose joints were opened without the need to lift the baseboard.

This little DIY trick does not require a specific tool and will only take a few minutes.

repair laminate floor joints

If we are in the worst case, we must determine if it is a placement problem, which would allow us to repair our laminate flooring installation, or fabrication.

The diagnosis should be relatively simple:

  • We took some leftover laths and put them together. This joint must be firm and without looseness. Test with several parts. If there is the slightest movement, it is a problem with the click system.
  • To try to see if the fiber board is too weak, we can try to fold one of the tabs of the click system of a lath or leftover installation. If it bends or breaks easily, that could be the problem. Certainly, someone with no experience will not know whether the required strength is large or small, unless we are dealing with a really good or really bad product.

These two situations are not common and, when we find one, it is due to a low quality product.

To fix a laminate floor with this problem, it is always better to hire a professional. If you still dare, the steps should be as follows:

  • Remove the baseboards or baseboards.
  • Determine which lines are affected and need to be repaired.
  • Thoroughly clean the inside of the joints you are trying to join. If there is dirt or small debris, they will not seal properly.
  • With the help of an installation lever and a hammer (preferably rubber) we set the beginning or the end of the line to close the joints. Before starting to hit, we must have locked the line on the other side to maintain the perimeter expansion joint.
  • It is not about hitting with all our strength. It is preferable to take small dry strokes and see the evolution.

Note: Do not install baseboards immediately after finishing the laminate floor repair, wait a few days. It is possible that some joint has not closed perfectly and can be reopened.

Repair raised floating floor

The first step in repairing a laminate floor that has been raised, also applicable to other types of laminate flooring, is to understand what happened.

repair raised laminate flooring

Why is laminate flooring raised?

The short answer is: because I didn’t have the space to do anything else.

As you already know, building materials and especially wood, expand and contract in the face of environmental changes (humidity, temperature, etc.). In our case, if the floor expands, and there is no space to do it freely, that is, if it hits a wall or building element, the only thing you can do is climb.

You may already be intuiting where you are the problem, in the expansion joints, or better, in the absence of these.

How to repair a raised laminate floor?

In this case, the repair is not complex, although it may take some time. The steps are as follows:

Problem location. Finding the strip or piece that has been lifted is not complicated, it is usually seen with the naked eye. Although it is never too much to check if any other piece has been lifted slightly, for this we can put a strip or level it on the floor, placing it in different places, to check if there is any type of inclination.

Depending on the direction, we will lift the corresponding footer and confirm that the platform is touching the wall, column, etc.

Brand and price. With a pencil, draw on the board or board that is causing the problem the distance to be cut so that when doing so there is adequate separation, usually between 0.5 and 1 cm. With the help of a multifunctional tool, perform the cut.

Check and reposition the footer. Check that the generally returned to its original state, that is, it is completely flat. In that case, you can replace the footer.

How to replace a broken or damaged board

We will not deceive you, this is a complicated task that can take a lot of time, depending on the method you decide to use.

Replace damaged blade or part only

This is a job for professionals. Although it seems easy to you, it is not.

The steps would be: make the cuts to remove the damaged panel, without damaging the adjacent ones; cut a short side and a long side of the new part’s click system; glue a short side and a long side of the adjacent strips, those corresponding to the place where the new piece will fit; fit the part with the aid of a rubber hammer; Put some weight on the newly installed board for a few hours, until the glue dries.

Lift or remove the floor until it reaches the damaged part

This method can be more laborious and time consuming, however, it does not require the level of expertise necessary for the prior art. Basically, anyone with any experience in installing this type of flooring can do so.

The steps are simple:

  • Determine where to start removing the slats. The idea is to remove as little as possible until it reaches the damaged one.
  • As soon as we know where to start, we remove the footers.
  • We are building up rows until we reach the damaged or broken part. The ideal is to place the slats that we are going to remove in an orderly way, so that when reassembling everything will snap back together quickly.
  • We replaced the strips and replaced all the strips we removed in the same order.
  • We fixed the baseboard on the wall again.
