What is a Trilayer Board?
A three-layer board is a solid wood board composed of three layers glued together for greater stability and resistance to bending. It is within what we can call planks or structural wood, that is, it is used for the construction of structures and not so much for decorative purposes.
The three-layer plate, as its name suggests, is composed of three layers of wood forming a sandwich. The outer faces in the longitudinal direction and the inner layer in the transverse direction. This inner layer, depending on the manufacturer and the use that the card will have, can be a little thicker.
At woods The most used are pine and fir, although you can also find oak, beech, larch …
O adhesive The most commonly used is MUF (melamine urea formaldehyde).
It is common to apply a roof based on melamine resins for formwork.
Trilayer Board Features
- Flexibility stability and resistance. The use of several layers of wood alternating the directions of the fiber compensates the natural movements of the wood, limiting the possibility of bending the board and increasing its resistance to bending.
- Large load capacity.
- Lightness. As a general rule, it is a light board, as it mainly uses light coniferous woods with densities between 450 and 550 kg / m3.
- Medium / low cost. The price of three-layer boards is low, especially when compared to other types of wooden boards. For example, a board measuring 2,000x500x27 millimeters has an approximate price of € 20-25.
Coatings for use in formwork
When three-layer boards are used for formwork, they are covered in order to improve their resistance and durability to moisture and also to the effects that other materials such as concrete or lime can have on wood.
O melamine resin based coating It is water repellent, that is, it does not let water pass and reduces the effects of concrete on wood. It is also non-stick, which facilitates the work and the result in formwork or similar works. For the specific formwork case, manufacturers usually add Yellow dye to the coating, hence the characteristic color of the form plates that we find in any work.
Polyurethane edge. This is an optional feature added by some manufacturers. With this, it is possible to reduce the moisture absorption of the wood and, thus, increase the number of times the board is used.
While these are the coatings we are likely to find, they are not the only options. There are others like: paints, polyurethane coatings or even metallic edges.
Uses of triple layer plates
The main use of three-layer plates is in construction. They are mainly used for formwork, although they can also be used as a structural element in floors, partitions or even roofs.
At Measures The most common are 2,000 × 500 and 1,000 × 500 mm. The thicknesses of 12, 16, 19, 21, 27, 32, 40 and 50 mm.
Where to buy Trilayer boards?
It is an abundant product, with high availability in wooden warehouses and hardware stores, so it is not difficult to find and buy three-layer boards.
Furthermore, on the Internet it is relatively easy to find this type of material on second hand websites. Our recommendation, if you choose this option, is to carefully check the condition of the boards before confirming the sale.
