There are tons of ideas for painting and decorating an empty wine bottle. But for the best results, there are a few tips to follow. After all, a bottle of wine is a canvas in the hands of an artist. Let’s see some recommendations:

  • To make vases with wine bottles, choose bottles of different sizes and shapes. Although it may seem that there is not a great diversity of shapes, the truth is that if we select different brands we will find some very curious shapes, with interesting variations in height and curvature.
  • Before we start the art work, let’s completely eliminate labels, grocery brands, prices, etc.
  • Not only do wine bottles serve our purpose. Other spirits such as champagne, brandy, rum or cognac offer the same service.
  • To make vases from wine bottles, it is most likely that we will have to cut the glass somewhere. It is a part of the process that requires special attention to avoid injuring your hands or eyes.

Vases with wine bottles – Materials

We are going to get down to business. Making vases from wine bottles will save us from investing in expensive decorative pieces. Working with these empty vases or flasks requires the use of abundant, cheap and easily obtainable materials. Let’s see some of them:

To make these vases with empty wine bottles, the first thing we will need are these bottles that we will be working on. As we have already warned, you have to choose different shapes and sizes to obtain a variety of models. While two or three identical bottles can make an interesting whole, the diversity the best.

A hot glue gun, with its respective glue sticks, a pencil, pen, marker, enamel paint of many colors, a flat paintbrush, masking tape, scissors, a scalpel or a cutter that can do a mark on the glass, some paper and a few sample images to copy will suffice to start the job.

  • As we have already stated, the first thing to do is to wash the bottles very carefully, trying to remove all labels. If there is any difficulty in removing the traces of glue, use varsol for household use, then we will wash them again with plenty of soap and water.
  • We dry the bottles and we mark with adhesive tape the geometric areas on which we want to work, if we want to capture several images. Some ideas in this regard can be random spirals, concentric circles, polka dots …
  • Before starting to paint, it is advisable to clean the surface of the bottle again, to remove any traces of dirt that may have been left by sticking it with duct tape.
  • Now using the flat brush let’s apply a coat of paint in a very light shade. It can be white or beige, which will serve as a background for our image. Always paint in the same direction, taking care not to erase the trace of the adhesive tape, if we want to create a collage of images. Depending on the color of the bottle, we may need up to three coats to achieve a solid, even surface.
  • If we want to capture a single image around the bottle, we could use spray paint. The result will be much better and the job much easier.
  • At this point in the process, you can remove the tape, if you wish. You will notice that, if you suspend the work at this time, you will already have a bottle of wine with a very attractive decoration.
  • But if you decide to continue, the next step is to use a pencil to draw the figures or pictures you want to paint.
  • Once you’ve drawn your characters based on the paint in the bottle, it’s just a matter of painting them with enamel paint, for which you need to have the full range of colors, or at least the ones you want. you imagined for your vases
  • Once you have finished painting all the pictures, in all the sections that you have divided the vase into, you just have to wait for it to dry and later remove the duct tape. You will already have beautiful decorated wine bottles, and best of all, no one will imagine that they were alcohol containers before.

The bottles of wine decorated in this way are already an interesting decorative object that will give a very personal atmosphere to your interior. But if you decide to go back to the original idea of making vases out of wine bottles, you will probably have to cut a section of the bottle to have a hole large enough to accommodate the flowers.

You have two options. The first is to go to a facility where they have the tools to do this job (recommended), and it won’t cost you more than a few dollars.

The other option is to do it at home, for which you just need to follow the following procedure:

  • The first thing to do is mark the section you are going to cut with a marker.
  • Then, with the scalpel and with extreme care, try to mark the groove. You just have to mark it. I don’t want to cut the bottle with the scalpel. You won’t make it and even if you did, you won’t get a perfect fit.
  • With the bottle in this state, you should only apply heat to the line you just drew. A candle is the appropriate instrument for this step. Focus the heat on the marked line, turning the bottle over the candle flame.
  • All you have to do is put the bottle in a bucket with very cold water. If possible, add ice cubes to lower the temperature even further. Repeating this procedure two or three times will cause the two sections of the bottle to separate with the application of gentle force pressure.
  • All you have to do is use sandpaper to polish the edge of your vase and that’s it. You already have a beautiful personalized vase to place your flowers.
