In the world of decor DIY or do it yourself, that is to say “do it yourself”, is increasingly used as an alternative and much cheaper solution to typical decoration. In this way, new resources and solutions have emerged such as transfer technique. What is this technique and how is it done?

What is the transfer technique

The theme of the printing photos or images paper to other types of surfaces is not entirely new in the sense that, for a long time, techniques such as screen printing have been used to emboss images on fabrics or clothing, especially on T- shirts. But what if, instead of a T-shirt, we want to do it on a wooden cabinet?

This is precisely what allows this new technique called transfer technique. With this we can transfer our images from paper to other surfaces, for example wooden furniture, so we can decorate them as we wish. It is an increasingly fashionable technique and widely commented on in forums and decoration salons. But what exactly does this technique consist of? What materials are needed to be able to do this?

Materials needed to perform the transfer technique

In order to perform the transfer technique only one specific ingredient is needed and it is a special transfer gel called a stand that can be bought or even made at home. This gel is what allows the image to transfer from paper to wood.

Of course, we will need the paper with the image to be copied, and chances are we will need a fine sandpaper as well. We’re also going to need a brush, paintbrush, or something we can “paint with water” with. With that and a little bit of patience (not too much), we’ll be ready. Let’s see what are the steps to follow.

How to do the transfer technique step by step

The obvious first step should be print the image you want to copy on our furniture. At this point, several issues should be taken into account. In the first place, it does not matter if the image is in color or in black and white, since they will serve us in both cases. On the other hand, it is necessary to check that the size of the image does not exceed that of the surface on which we want to transfer it. And last but not least, you must print the flipped image, in mirror mode, especially if it contains text, because otherwise, by pasting it on the new surface, the letters would be upside down.

The next step is to check the condition of the surface on which we are going to paste the image. It is necessary that check that the surface is perfectly smooth, that there are no cracks or roughness that can affect the final result. The best thing to do is to go over these areas with a fine sandpaper to remove any irregularities and then clean the area so that it is completely smooth and clean before starting the process.

Now I know apply transfer gel on the side where the image we want to print is located, and we glue it on the wooden surface. To wet the paper, we can help ourselves with a small brush or similar object, always making sure that they are clean. We let the gel act. When the gel has dried, it is time to remove the paper.

To remove the paper, you don’t have to pull it off by the ends or anything similar. What to do is rewet the paper, this time for the face where the drawing is not (the one that is free). You should gradually wet the paper while carefully rubbing the area with your fingers. We will see how the paper almost collapses on its own. This way we avoid leaving the paper jammed and we get an even better printed image.

If everything went well when the paper was thrown away, we will see that the design was printed on the furniture. Obviously, the sharpness and quality of the image is not the same as on paper and it does not have as much definition or brightness. However, the application of a wax layer Above, we can make it stand out a bit more and give it a very attractive final finish.

Above all, the most interesting thing about this technique is that it is very easy to perform and that it offers many possibilities. It can be applied to many furniture, and decoration options are almost endless. You can make texts, logos of our favorite musical groups, landscapes, Christmas motifs or any other type, etc. As they say, the options are huge.

It should also be said that there is no unique way to apply this technique, for example there are those who prefer to spray the image with a spray with water, instead of using a paintbrush or the like. In our opinion, the brush is more effective because it moistens the image while helping to transfer it. In any case, you can also use a spray and a brush together, or other more comfortable and effective tools.

Examples of designs with transfer technology

In this article, we mainly referred to the steps to apply this technique on wooden furniture, but it can also be applied on other materials, such as ceramic or even on stones. Once we have perfected the technique, there will be hardly any surface that will resist us.

Then Gallery you can see some examples of decoration made with transfer technique. There are many other examples that can be found online that you can be inspired by when decorating your own furniture.

What did you think of this technique? Do you think it’s an original and inexpensive way to decorate? Of course we do. And if you think that maybe the end result won’t convince you, you can always do some testing with an old piece of furniture or one that you are going to throw away.
